Ed Zahler

Ed started growing daylilies when he was just six years old, and his love for them has never faded. Although he started his first hybridizing by the time he was just 10 years old, attending college, marriage, raising two children, and establishing a career lessened his time to grow and hybridize daylilies.

By 1972, he was back into it and by 1988, his first introductions were the very popular miniatures, H. DOT DOT, H. DASH DASH, H. LITTLE EDDIE, and H.DOT DOT. More followed throughout the early 1990s.

The long-term illness and death of his beloved wife, Linda, slowed him down a bit. When he got up to speed again in 2002, Ed introduced four daylilies in honor of his wife. In time, Ed’s continued hybridizing has created a line of distinctive diploids with qualities often found in tetraploids.

Ed was awarded the prestigous Herman Pruitt Mentoring award in 2022 by Region 15. The award is given to a Region 15 member who has made outstanding efforts in mentoring others regarding daylilies. This may include mentoring youth, new hybridizers, community members, or a new daylily club.

Ed passed May 22, 2024. But his legacy will live on in his fabulous diploids like HECK OF A DIP (which won 2nd place for the President's Cup at the 2018 National) and SPENDIPEROUS IN PINK. Duane is working very hard to continue his legacy by continuing his work and evaluating seedlings made by Ed for future introduction.

Duane started hybridizing daylilies in 2010 in Goose Creek, SC, although he has always had a love of the flower kingdom. Through encouragement and proper guidance, his natural, underlying ability has flourished.

Duane presented his first introduction in 2014 with expectations of many more to come.

At the AHS Region 15 Summer 2013 Meeting, convention attendees were given flags to select their favorite seedlings. At the end of the convention, 29 flags had been placed on one of Duane's seedling, now known as 29 FLAGS OVER CONWAY, signaling a brilliant beginning to Duane’s hybridizing program. HIs Blue Deva won the Jeffcoat Hybridizer award in 2018. He has many new exciting seedlings sure to be introductions in coming years.

The Garden

Ed and Duane have merged their operation and efforts to create a beautiful garden in Conway, SC – and once you have seen how these two are changing the face of diploid daylilies, you will not believe they are doing all of this in a small backyard garden!
